Why law firms struggle to rank
Most firms already have a website. The trouble is that someone searching for a lawyer sees the map, a few legal directories and the firms with the biggest budgets before they see you.
- Directories take the top spots. Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and similar directories often hold several of the first ten results for practice area searches, so you compete with them as well as with other firms.
- Bigger firms outspend you. Billboard and television budgets buy brand searches. You win on the specific searches that matter in your city, not on volume.
- One page for every practice area. A single "practice areas" page can't rank for car accidents, divorce and wills at the same time. Each case type needs its own page.
- A Google Business Profile nobody looks after. Wrong categories, no services listed and office details that differ from your directory listings all hold the firm back in the map results.
- Content written to avoid risk. Ethics rules make firms cautious, so pages end up vague. Google and AI assistants skip vague pages in favour of the ones that answer the question.
- Invisible in AI answers. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview for a lawyer, it names firms that are described the same way across the web. Inconsistent profiles leave you out.
What law firm SEO includes
Every retainer covers the same ground. Higher packages do more of it each month.
- Practice area and city research. The searches clients actually type, such as "car accident lawyer" plus your city, filtered to what your firm can realistically win this year.
- A page per practice area. One page for each case type you want more of, each with its own keyword, a direct answer first and the questions clients ask on a consultation call.
- Technical SEO. Speed on a phone, crawling, indexing, internal links and redirects, so nothing caps how far the content can rank.
- Legal schema. LegalService markup, the legal version of local business markup, plus FAQ and breadcrumb markup, so Google can tell what the firm does and where.
- Google Business Profile and citations. Your profile managed every month and your name, address and phone made consistent across legal and general directories.
- Content and links. Articles that answer the questions clients ask before they call, and on the Growth and Authority packages, links earned through genuine outreach and digital PR, never bought.
- Reporting you can read. Rankings, traffic and the calls and form enquiries they produce, in a monthly report that takes five minutes.
Local SEO for law firms
Most legal searches are local, and the map results sit above the ordinary blue links. Google ranks the map by relevance, distance and prominence, so the work is about making the firm relevant and prominent for the searches near each office.
That means the right primary and secondary categories in Google Business Profile, every practice area listed as a service, a page on your site for each office, and consistent details everywhere the firm is listed. Reviews matter too. Ask clients for them in a way your state bar allows, and reply to each one.
For firms in Houston and Chicago there are pages that combine the website and local SEO: law firm website design and SEO in Houston and law firm website design and SEO in Chicago.
Search engine optimization for attorneys in AI answers
More people now ask an AI assistant before they search. The assistant answers in a paragraph and names two or three firms, so being one of them is the new page one.
This is part of every retainer, through AI SEO services: practice area pages that open with a plain answer, consistent firm details and schema, crawler access for the assistants' search bots, and mentions on the directories and publications those assistants already cite.
Start with a law firm SEO audit
If you want to see the plan before committing, a one-off technical and content audit is $450, delivered in three days. You get a prioritised list of what to fix, which practice areas are winnable in your city and what each change is worth. If you start a retainer within 30 days, the $450 comes off your first month.
Packages and pricing
All three packages are month to month. If the work isn't earning its cost, you stop, and everything built stays with the firm.
| Package | Best for | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | One office, a few practice areas | From $600/mo | 15 keywords tracked, 4 pages optimized and 2 articles a month, technical fixes, Google Business Profile managed, schema, AI search optimization, monthly report |
| Growth | A competitive city or several practice areas | From $1,400/mo | 50 keywords tracked, 10 pages optimized and 5 articles a month, link building and digital PR, competitor tracking, call and form tracking in GA4, everything in Foundation |
| Authority | Several offices or statewide | From $2,800/mo | 150 keywords tracked, 20 pages optimized and 8 articles a month, priority link acquisition, content refresh, AI citation monitoring, fortnightly strategy calls, everything in Growth |
How to choose a law firm SEO company
Whoever you hire, ask these questions before you sign anything:
- Who does the work? Many agencies sell with a senior person and deliver with a junior team. Ask who will be on your monthly call.
- How long is the contract? Twelve months is common. Month to month means the provider has to keep earning the fee.
- Do they guarantee rankings? Treat a guarantee as a warning sign. Nobody controls Google.
- Where do the links come from? Bought links and private blog networks work until they get the site penalised.
- Who owns the content and the profiles? Your pages, Google Business Profile and directory listings should be in the firm's name from day one.
- What do they report? Rankings alone don't pay the bills. Ask how they will report calls and consultation requests.
Here the answers are simple: I do the work, the retainer is month to month, nothing is guaranteed except the work itself, links come from real outreach, and everything is yours.
Law firm internet marketing beyond SEO
SEO compounds, but it is slow. Many firms pair it with paid search while the rankings build. AI digital marketing runs Google Ads and other channels from $700 a month, with ad spend paid from your own account, and ads can bring enquiries in the first week.
Rankings only help if the website turns a visitor into a call. If yours is slow, built on one practice areas page or misses enquiries after hours, start with law firm web design and intake automation, then add SEO on top.
Proof: what was built for a personal injury firm
San Diego Law Firm is a personal injury practice that handles auto accident, wrongful death and sexual harassment cases. I built its site so each of those case types has its own page, keyword and schema, added local schema and San Diego signals for searches on a phone, and connected a CRM that replies to every enquiry the moment it arrives.
That structure is the foundation law firm SEO builds on: one page per case type, strong local signals and nothing lost after hours.
How the work runs
- Audit. Technical issues, your Google Business Profile, the directories you're listed in and the practice area searches you can win.
- Plan. One keyword per page, the order of work by value, and a content calendar you approve.
- Foundation. Speed, indexing, schema, internal links and your profile and citations come first, because content can't outrank a broken base.
- Pages and content. Practice area pages and articles drafted, approved by the firm and published.
- Measure. A monthly report on rankings, traffic and enquiries, then more of what works and less of what doesn't.
