Why beauty and skincare stores struggle to sell
Every skincare brand claims brightness, gentleness and results, so claims alone persuade nobody. A shopper comparing tabs needs one clear reason to choose you, and most stores hide it.
- The real difference is buried. What makes the formula different sits in an ingredient list nobody reads.
- Actives mean nothing to most buyers. Ten ingredient names copied off the carton don't explain why the product works.
- The first order feels risky. Asking a stranger to spend $154 on a brand they don't know is the biggest objection in skincare.
- Products only work as a routine. Four products that work in sequence get sold as four separate items, so the basket stays small.
- Products, training and services compete for space. Brands that also sell courses or appointments end up with one confused menu.
- Bookings arrive by phone or DM. Salons and studios answer messages mid-appointment and lose the client who wanted to book late at night.
What I build for beauty brands
- A Shopify store built to sell the routine. AI Shopify store development starts from $1,500 for up to 20 products. The Growth package, from $2,750, adds collection architecture, cross-sells and bundles, abandoned-cart and post-purchase flows, and a full schema and Core Web Vitals pass.
- A booking website for salons and studios. AI WordPress website development from $999 gives each service its own page with the price stated, and puts your booking tool on every page.
- Ads and email that bring the right buyer back. AI digital marketing from $700 a month covers a paid channel, a landing page per campaign, social posts and email. It's a flat fee, and you pay ad spend directly to the platforms.
- Search for product and ingredient questions. AI SEO services from $600 a month optimize collections and product pages with Product markup, so buyers find you on Google and in AI answers.
Photography stays yours, but I specify exactly what each product needs: crop, background, resolution and count. Standardising product photography is usually the biggest visual upgrade a beauty store can make.
Recent beauty and skincare projects
- URSKIN Beauty: a founder-led, Black-owned skincare brand whose Vitamin C formulas are made for melanin-rich skin. The Shopify store states the founder's reason before any product, explains ten actives in plain words and shows Cleanse, Tone, Treat and Moisturize as one four-step ritual. A $29.99 Mini Glow Kit means nobody has to spend $154 to try the routine.
- Beautellionaire: a beauty brand and lash academy selling professional lash products, online certifications and beauty education. The Shopify store brings products, training and services together in one mobile-first store, with an academy page, an SEO-focused structure and an AI chatbot for instant support.
- Cocoa By Design: a spray tan studio in Fountain Valley, Orange County, where Corrie Arleen Benson has hand-airbrushed 23,000 clients since 2017. The WordPress site gives every service its own page with prices up front, publishes prep and aftercare in plain English, embeds Vagaro booking on every page and places the $100 monthly membership beside the $75 tan.
How a beauty project runs
Discovery covers your products, customers, competitors and where sales are being lost today. You then get a written proposal with a fixed price and an exact launch date, and nothing is built until you approve it.
Most Shopify stores go live in 3 to 7 days. URSKIN Beauty and Beautellionaire each took a week, and Cocoa By Design took five days. At handoff you get documentation, recorded walkthroughs and training, so adding products and running promotions never needs a developer.
